What the SMMT figures show
There are now 171 fully electric car models on sale in the UK, up from 86 in August 2023, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
That's 85 new models in three years, or one every fortnight. SMMT notes that a new model typically takes three to five years to develop and bring to market, so today's choice reflects investment made years ago.
Across all powertrains, UK buyers can choose from 385 models from more than 60 brands. With 109 plug-in hybrid and 52 hybrid models alongside the EVs, SMMT says more than 75% of the models on sale can drive without tailpipe emissions.
EVs now come in every segment, from city cars and family hatchbacks to executive saloons, SUVs and sports cars. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “Britain's new car market has never offered so much choice, with a new electric model arriving every fortnight and zero emission motoring now available in every shape and size of vehicle.”
Range is no longer the sticking point
The latest fully electric cars cover around 300 miles on a charge on average, more than twice the 127 miles the average UK driver covers in a week, according to SMMT.
SMMT's weekly figure is based on the Department for Transport's National Travel Survey. On those numbers, many drivers could go a week or more between charges.
