Volkswagen ID.3 GTI: key specs

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI has 240 kW (326 PS) and 545 Nm driving the rear wheels, making it the most powerful GTI Volkswagen has built in series production.

What makes it a GTI

Volkswagen revealed the ID.3 GTI in the 50th year of GTI history, and it carries the badge's best-known details. The red stripe across the front comes from the first Golf GTI of 1976, and the car is offered in Tornado Red.

Inside, the Superclark sports seats reinterpret the tartan of the original GTI's seats, and the steering wheel has a red 12 o'clock marker. The standard 20-inch Wörthersee alloys are a nod to the GTI meeting in Austria.

A GTI button on the steering wheel selects the new GTI mode. It sets the power delivery, progressive steering and adaptive DCC chassis to their sportiest, turns the background lighting red, plays an engine sound in the background and makes Launch Control available.

What GTI and hot hatch purists might not like

Firstly, it’s electric. Secondly, it’s the first rear-wheel drive GTI ever made. The Golf GTI is arguably the inception of the hot hatch formula: powerful engine, front wheel drive, room for the family. 

A departure to rear wheel drive completely changes the driving characteristics of a car. Not least of all a hot hatch.

That said, the Focus RS infamously introduced a ‘Drift’ button which put most of the power to the rear wheels. Something hot hatches of yore could only dream of doing. 

Range and charging

Volkswagen forecasts a range of up to 601 km (about 373 miles) from the ID.3 GTI's 79 kWh battery.

DC charging at up to 183 kW takes it from 10–80% in about 29 minutes, and forecast consumption is 14.5 kWh/100 km, or about 4.3 miles per kWh. These are forecasts for a near-production car, so they may change before it goes on sale.

When is it coming to the UK?
