Salary sacrifice appears on your payslip as a reduction in your gross pay, usually on its own line, before tax and National Insurance are worked out. If your take-home pay has changed since joining a car scheme, that's the mechanism working as intended — not an error on your payslip.

Below is a real before-and-after example, so you can check your own payslip line by line.

What changes on your payslip

Three things change when a salary sacrifice deduction starts. A new line appears on your payslip. Your gross, taxable pay falls by that amount. And tax and National Insurance are then calculated on the lower figure, not your original salary.

Take the example above. This driver earns £4,583 a month before tax and sacrifices £481 towards their car. Basic pay stays the same at £4,583 - but the revised salary, the figure tax and National Insurance are actually calculated on, drops to £4,102.

The line you're looking for

Payroll systems don't all use the same label. Look out for: Gross Sacrifice, Salary Sacrifice, SS Car, Car Scheme, or Revised Salary. If none of these appear, check with your payroll team - the wording varies more than the mechanism does.

Why your gross pay has gone down

This is the point of the scheme, not a side effect. Because the deduction comes out of your pay before tax and National Insurance, the drop in your take-home pay is smaller than the amount you've sacrificed.

In the example above: £481 is sacrificed, but take-home pay only falls by £310. The difference - £171 - is tax and National Insurance you'd otherwise have paid on that £481. For more on how the mechanism works, see our guide to how salary sacrifice affects your tax.

What about the tax band?

Sometimes the gap is bigger still. £4,583 a month is £54,996 a year - a higher-rate taxpayer. After sacrificing £5,772 a year (£481 a month), this driver's revised salary is £49,224 - under the £50,270 higher-rate threshold. That's why their income tax drop looks so large relative to the sacrifice: they're no longer paying 40% on the top slice of their income. The Benefit-in-Kind line

One deduction works differently: Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax. Unlike the sacrifice itself, BIK is taken after tax, not from your gross pay. In this example it's £18 a month, at the 4% BIK rate for the 2026/27 tax year.

The rate and the tax year always travel together - a rate quoted without a year may already be out of date. Why it doesn't match the calculator exactly

If your first payslip doesn't quite match what the salary sacrifice calculator showed you, that's usually one of a few things: the timing of your first deduction, a part-month if your sacrifice started mid-pay-period, when your BIK charge begins, or other deductions sitting alongside it - student loan repayments or pension contributions, for example.
