Understanding your EV's winter range: How far can you really go?

Headshot of blog author
Anna Brow
November 8, 2024

Winter can bring up a lot of questions for anyone considering switching to an electric vehicle — especially when it comes to range. It’s natural to wonder whether cold weather will impact how far your EV can go on a single charge. After all, the last thing any driver wants is to feel uncertain about making it from A to B.

The good news? While winter temperatures can slightly affect your EV’s range, the impact is slight, and with a few simple adjustments, you can maximise your battery’s performance through the colder months.

In this guide, we’ll tackle some common myths around EV range in winter, then share straightforward tips to help you get the most out of every charge — so you can drive with confidence, no matter the weather.

The truth about your EV’s winter range

When it comes to EVs, myths about battery performance in winter weather often sound scarier than reality. Many drivers worry that colder temperatures could seriously impact their EV’s range or battery health, but the truth is that EV batteries are built to last, even through a few frosty mornings. Studies show that the average EV retains around 80-90% of its original battery capacity even after driving 100,000 miles or more. That’s a solid track record that proves EV batteries are designed for durability.

Now, it’s true that colder temperatures can lead to a slight decrease in range — mainly because the battery has to work a little harder to keep the car warm and maintain performance. Depending on the specific model and weather conditions, you might see a temporary range reduction of around 10-20%. Still, this effect is typically manageable and not as dramatic as some might think.

Understanding these minor adjustments can help set realistic expectations. Winter doesn’t spell trouble for your EV; it just requires a bit of extra care and a few handy strategies (which we’ll dive into shortly) to keep your EV running smoothly all season. So, while winter may bring a few adjustments, it’s no reason to worry: your EV is built to keep up.

Practical tips to maximise winter driving

Keeping your EV running smoothly during winter doesn’t require major changes — just a few easy habits to help maximise your range. Here’s how you can get the most out of your battery in cold weather:

1. Don’t skip the warm-up‍

One of the best winter perks of an EV is the ability to precondition the cabin, letting you warm up the car before you even start driving. By heating the car while it’s still plugged in, you’ll save valuable battery power that would otherwise go toward warming the interior on the road. Many EVs even allow you to schedule preconditioning through an app, so your car is ready to go, cosy and at peak efficiency, as soon as you’re ready to drive. Starting warm helps maximise range, making preconditioning a winter must-do.‍

2. Find shelter‍

Cold temperatures can impact any car’s performance, and EVs are no exception. Parking in a garage or sheltered area helps keep your battery warm, which means it won’t need as much energy to heat things up when you start driving. If you don’t have a garage, try parking close to buildings or under covers whenever possible to protect the battery from extreme cold. Minimising exposure to freezing temperatures can prevent range loss and ensure your EV stays in top form even in winter weather.

3. Charge strategically‍

For optimal battery health, aim to keep your EV within a “comfort zone” of around 20-80% charged. In winter, allowing the battery to drop below 20% can cause unnecessary strain and reduce efficiency, so try to top up sooner if possible. Likewise, charging to 100% is fine for occasional long trips, but for regular winter driving, 80% is ideal for balancing battery health and range. Strategic charging is a simple but effective way to keep your EV performing reliably in colder weather.

You can charge up overnight when rates are at their lowest, or choose an EV-specific tariff to top up for as little as 7p per kWh with Ovo’s Charge Anytime add-on. We’ll even throw in 5,000 miles for free! Talk about keeping your charging costs down.

4. Use eco mode‍

Most EVs come with an Eco Mode, which automatically reduces energy output for heating and optimises performance to use less power. When it’s cold out, switching to Eco Mode helps extend your range by moderating acceleration, slowing down power-hungry features, and keeping your climate control at a more efficient level. Activating Eco Mode can also prevent sudden battery drain during high-energy activities like rapid acceleration or heating, making it a handy winter tool.

5. Think traction‍

In cold weather, tyre pressure tends to drop, which can affect your EV’s traction and range. Check tyre pressure regularly throughout winter, as proper inflation can help reduce rolling resistance, improve energy efficiency, and boost your range. Cold-weather driving also benefits from a little extra attention to tyre tread and condition, as they play a big role in safe handling. Keeping your tyres in top shape means better range and added security on icy or wet roads.

6. Easy does it‍

In winter, a gentler driving style goes a long way in preserving battery power and maintaining range. Accelerate smoothly, brake gradually, and keep to moderate speeds to help your EV conserve energy. Cold weather can make batteries work harder, so every bit of smooth driving counts toward getting the most out of each charge. Plus, these habits make for a more comfortable ride, perfect for winter’s slower, more mindful pace.

These simple tips can help your EV perform at its best, even in colder temperatures. Small adjustments make a big impact, ensuring that winter driving is as efficient and enjoyable as possible.

Embrace the change

Winter driving with an EV isn’t a challenge — it’s just a bit different. The good news is that these tips aren’t only useful for the colder months; they’ll help you maintain your battery’s health and optimise range all year long. With a few small adjustments, you can keep your EV performing at its best, whether it’s crisp and cold or bright and warm outside.

Ultimately, winter won’t stop your EV from delivering a great driving experience. With a few proactive habits, you’ll get the most out of your battery and enjoy a smooth, comfortable ride all season long. Embrace the change, keep these tips in mind, and let your EV take you wherever you need to go — no matter the weather.
